Lightbulb SHOUTcast

Is it alright to run a SHOUTcast server?

I've set up a test on http://organizedhardcore.net:8000 for my project, http://OrganizedHardcore.Org/

I don't think so on a shared server. Uses too much resources. Can't use CHATs either - except ones that simply track Java clients...

What are CHATs?

I don't think SHOUTcast server uses a lot of CPU. More than anything, it consumes bandwidth, which has a monthly limit in my case.

Who should I contact at Surpass for this kind of thing, or what board/forum should I post on?

Chat scripts...like Chatrooms.

Shoutcast isn't easy on resources. Sure it will use up a lot of bandwith, but it's something that will strain the server more and more based on how many users are listening. I've been looking into doing the same thing with my dedicated, but decided against it due to the resources it would take up, and the money I'd have to spend just on music clearance.

Support would be the people to check about it, but I'm sure they will end up telling you the same thing (that it's not allowed on shared servers). http://desk.surpasshosting.com

Also, an alternative that won't have you using your own site resources, as well as clears the music with the RIAA is Live365. You might want to try them. http://www.live365.com

Thanks for the reply David. Your avatar is mighty hot for a David. Thanks also for the links and thorough answers.

Anyhow, I understand SHOUTcast resource consumption increases proportionately with the number of listeners, and could be overwhelming for a server. However, limits can be set. I wouldn't want to exhaust my bandwidth quota, anyhow. So, it is possible to run a SHOUTcast server with moderated constraints.

Currently I am running a SHOUTcast server on an under-clocked Athlon 1800, and the CPU usage doesn't even register above 0% on the "top" program. It's running off cable with bandwidth for 3 users at the quality I am using. I would like to have the capacity for 20, which is pretty reasonable.

I'll check with Surpass Support now...

Thanks, it's my best friend Mandy.

Even with limiting, support may be reluctant to do it because whatever goes out of it has to be cleared as well, if it's copyrighten material. It's best to ask Support and see what they say say about it. http://desk.suprasshosting.com

We do not run Shoutcast on shared servers, sorry.

Since she's only 17 and I'm 25, that makes me a dirty old man, too. But I'm ok with that lol She's actually a very awesome person, who's age is easy to forget when you talk to her. Too bad the rest of the teenager universe doesn't share this same fluke of maturity.
