Upgrading from oc5 to oc10?

Hi,

I have some questions about upgrading from oc5 to oc10. I haven't decided yet but have to clarify certain issues first. Please bear with me...

On 16 Nov, I purchased the oc5 plan for "domain1.com". On 28 Nov, I found that my bandwidth exceeded. In short, I used up all 100gb of bandwidth in less than a month (from 16 Nov to 28 Nov). My site is only popular now due to a certain 'fever/mania' that's going on, and I think it'll die down after a couple of months. But I'm still thinking of upgrading to a oc10 plan just so that I can have enough bandwidth each month.

1) Till today, I have not completed a month of oc5. What will happen if I upgrade to oc10? I can probably wait till 16 Dec to upgrade, to complete at least a month with oc5. If I upgrade then, does that mean that I will get refunded on the balance 11 months of oc5 (i.e. $59 divide by 12, multiply by 11), and I pay 11 months of oc10 (i.e. $159 divide by 12, multiply by 11)?

2) I read thru some previous threads, and I think I will have to switch servers if upgrading from oc5 to oc10? I also read that oc10 have an additional 'main account' that has 10gb space + 10gb bandwidth.

Now, 10gb bandwidth is DEFINITELY not enough for "domain1.com" (which is why I upgrade in the first place). So if I want to use another domain eg. "domain2.com" as the main account of oc10 (and "domain1.com" only as a sub-account), is there going to be additional cost? I know there is a fee to change main domains in oc5 itself, but now that it's an upgrade to oc10 (sort of like buying a new plan), is that fee still applicable?

3) Also, will Support be able to help me transfer the entire "domain1.com" over from oc5 to a sub-account in oc10? Will there be down time? Will nameservers have to be changed as well? Does that mean I'll have to set up "domain2.com" at oc10 first, before moving "domain1.com" over from oc5/sh88? I think there have to be a main account in any reseller plan before there can be any sub-accounts ya? (<- seems like a stupid question, sorry!)

Sorry if it's confusing. I hope the transfer will be as transparent as possible to my visitors. Thanks in advance!

I'll try to explain this...

You will have to change servers. You will need to use a second domain for your main account, the only cost you will face is purchasing the domain. Otherwise, you're really registering for a new account, so you won't face any type of "switching" fee.

You will get refunded for the 11 months you didn't use for the oc5 plan, but you will pay for the entire 12 months for the oc10 plan.

Surpass will be able to help you transfer the site over, but you'll have to set up domain2.com first, and create the account for domain1.com in WHM. There will be a nameserver change, so you might have a downtime during which propagation occures... but you could overlap the time when you keep both accounts open, which should minimize downtime. I'm sure other people can offer better hints, there is ways to get near seamless transition, but sometimes it's just easier to say "I'm changing server, expect some down time in the next 2 days."

I think I answered everything? It's kinda early in the morning for me, so if you need further clarification, just ask and we'll be glad to help.

If I decide to upgrade, where should I go to upgrade? Do I have to email Support?

Hi Cyndy,

I saw this at the page:

Quote:
PLEASE NOTE: If you are upgrading to RESELLER from Shared, you will need to order the reseller plan on our website. We will transfer your files for you and cancel your previous account. Please purchase the reseller plan on our website and then email our sales department with your domain name to finalize the move.
does that mean I don't fill in the upgrade form? and i go straight to purchase a new plan instead? thanks.

Yeah that's what I had to do when I upgraded from a shared plan to OC10.

You just buy the account through the normal ordering process, then email support with your cpanel info for both accounts, and they will copy all the files over quicker then you can say "Go Surpass!" Once that is done, your old account will remain active for a little bit longer just in case (so you can grab stuff yourself, etc), and then they will close your other account, so you wont be double billed.

It's painless, I promise. If you need any more help, let me know.

Thanks, Mistik! Though I have a few more questions...

1) "domain2.com" is hosted elsewhere now, and if i want to use it as a main account for oc10, will Support be able to transfer the entire site over from my current host (before I change the nameservers)? My current host is using CPanel.

2) I have never used WHM before, and the demo I tried just now was confusing But, am I right to say that although "domain2.com" is a 'main account', it will also be listed as one of the accounts, having its own CPanel?

3) So there will be a set of login details for WHM, and a different set of login details for the main account "domain2.com"'s CPanel?

4) Does that also mean that I can actually create a package for "domain1.com" and request for it to be transferred from oc5 BEFORE I touch/transfer from current host/change nameservers for "domain2.com"?

Sorry for so many questions. Thanks in advance

As long as your host is using cPanel, yes Surpass can transfer it over for you.

The main account will not be listed in WHM, but it does have its own cPanel. cPanel basically works to manage that domain, and WHM is used to manage the rest of the domains you might want to add (if there's more then just domain1). You can also access all other cPanel accounts through your main cPanel login.

The login details are the same for WHM and the main cPanel account.

You don't have to do the transfers in any order, I don't think, but you will have to set up the package and account for domain1 before Surpass can transfer it from the oc5 account.
