Subdomain or addon domain

Ok, I've read through some threads and I'm more confused now.

Can someone definitively tell me the different between addon domains and subdomains?

I'm under the impression that a add-on domain is where you can have multiple domains linked to one account. ie. test1.com and test2.com are tied to the test1 account.

Subdomains are sub.test1.com and sub2.test2.com. Is that correct?

Now if I want to create a subdomain I go to the control panel and create a subdomain, but after I type in the field.domain.com then click add, how do I setup the redirection. If I just want to use sub.domain.com is that all I have to do? Or do I have to set up a redirection?

Please help!

Making a new subdomain like sub.domain.com will make a new folder called 'sub' in your public_html folder, there you can put the files you want to show up for your subdomain.

Add-on domain is a second domain yes, you can setup test2.com to load test1.com/test2 for example. If you want test1.com and test2.com to both show the same site, you'll have to use the 'Parked Domain' feature.

Direction for your subdomain you can setup after you add a new subdomain, then below there's a button 'Setup Redirection', there you can choose where you want your subdomain to go.

If you want sub.domain.com to go to the folder /sub, then that's all you have to do. You use the redirect feature only if you want it to go to a different folder, otherwise it's already set up to go to the same folder as the subdomain name.

As a little hint though, be careful with making subdomains for addon domains. They will appear in the main domain folder (public_html) and not under the addon domain folder. So you can't have the same subdomain for multiple domains (blog.domain1.com, blog.domain2.com). This is just due to a DNS trick that makes subdomains work.
