CHMOD question?

I was under the impression the chmod was a unix/linux shell comand...

How are people able to run that command without shell access.

I only ask because I've seen chmod mentioned several times in various threads!

Thanks for any help offered!

CHMOD can also be done in FTP, through the File Manager and many scripting languages allow you to perform it as well.

I figured you'd be able to answer that. My brain is jello at the moment and couldn't make any sense of a reason for it enough to actually post.

Your saying the command CHMOD can be run through FTP, or are you saying I can change the permissions of a file in an ftp environment?

The way it appears in some of the threads, people are actually running the chmod command and I was just curious how this is possible, I believe you can purchase shell access to the server for a 1 time fee, but I do not believe that is what they were referring to, so I wondered what I was missing!

Thanks again!

I'm saying you can change file permissions through FTP, which is most likely done through a layer which calls the CHMOD command on the OS level.

Without shell access this is not possible right?

Example:

chmod 755 filename

I think I get it

Therefore,

there is no method in place to run the CHMOD command, unless it is run from code/script.

Again, I appoligize for my bone headedness on this, it just appeared otherwise in other threads.

Thanks again, I'll consider this question answered!!
