htaccess and mail

if I get a 500 internal server error (or other) due to a bad htaccess file,
does it disable webmail and mail forwarders too?
or does htaccess only affect HTTP (and not mail)?

I think it only applies to the folder the htaccess file is in, but I could be wrong.

It'll only affect HTTP requests within the range of the .htaccess file.
