you might want to give them a bit more detailed info like for 404, its a dead link so say something link oops there is no page here, if you have been directed here by another page please contact us with the offending link.

try babblefish on altavista for a french translation

Here's an easy to use perl script for generating custom error messages. I used this several years ago before I started writing my own error pages...

It's basically a text file that if you know just a little HTML, you can customize easily. It also includes an option to e-mail you when an error orrcurs, however this option may overload your inbox.
