Website under development - information page - how to?

I want to take my website offline while I work on it and just have an "Under development" information page for the whole site. I don't want people getting to underlying pages that they may have previously linked to either. Is there an easy way to do this?

It was an option in the Control Panel of another company I hosted with but I can't spot anything obvious here.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Not that I'm aware of, except perhaps move the contents of your site totally to a subdirectory...

i would just move the original content to a subfolder. theoretically you could add passes or just chmod folders -but its inconvenient as hell when developing things fast since many people tend to forget after a day or two what the passes were (at least i )

I would reccommend you did all changes on your local machine actually - or in a new folder at your server- and let people experience a full change directly the day you would like to publish it. Under construction pages annoys people as hell -its at least better to make anice page that says " back in 2006..0x.xx due to enhancing the site " or equal.

People tend to be very unforgiving online- so if they cant find info- they just move on,and they wont check in unless you say when its up sorta..

If you dont have a dynamic IP (or dont mind updating the htaccess ehn you do change your IP):
add this to your main .htaccess:

Quote:
order deny,allow
deny from all
allow from YOURIP
ErrorDocument 403 "Offline Message, Be Back On [Date]"
HTH,
Kieren
