VPS Vs. Dedicated Server

Hello,

I've been wondering what the difference is between a VPS and a Dedicated Server. Obviously the dedicated server is better, but in what ways? What can you do on a dedicated server that you can't on a VPS?

Thanks!
Clinton

Well to put it in a very simple way a Dedicated is all yours. The whole server, storage, CPU and the lot to use as you desire.

A VPS (virtual private server) Is in many ways like a dedicated in function but your sharing a server. Yet unlike a shared account you have a virtually partitioned area of the server that is all yours. Your sharing the resources of that server though with others. Hard drive, CPU and all that.

VPS is good for the person who wants more control with less hassle of neighbors over loading the resources and yet your not quiet ready for a dedicated server. To put it simple.

If your looking for more detail I'm sure others will chime in.

Thanks for the reply, Skipdawg. So with a VPS it's not possible to use too much of a certain resource accidentally? Even though I have an extremely small site, I don't like the idea that I could accidentally have too many MySQL connections or take too much CPU. With a VPS, is that possible? Does your site only affect your site or will the people you're sharing it with be affected?

Thanks
Clinton

Well I'm still trying to figure some of that out. I've had some high server load. I have spiked the CPU out at 100% many times so far and have hit in the 80% area of memory. Odd thing is when this has happened nothing was showing as going on with my sites and or forums.

But from my understanding activity on your sites should not affect things to the point where your VPS affects another VPS. I guess time will be the teacher.

But I upgraded from the OC5 plan and it is so much better. More control and all that. Just made the jump back in May. Due to being Summer been taking my time learning my way around it all hehehe
