[Answered] subdomain
Sorry for another noob question.
cpanel offers me to put my new directory for the domain in /public_html/{dir name} but doesn't that also mean I can surf to it as a sub directory? And what would be the problem if I put the sub domain in a folder off of the home Called /Subdomains/{dir name}... now that it isn't a directory under public_html will there be a problem? Can I still password protect the whole subdomain? and have it work? Can I install things like joomla in the subdomain that is password protected? so only people with a password can surf the newly created joomla website? Ahh, a sunny day here. and not too many of those happen in march. I better get outside... and pretend I am not a noob. |

In cPanel when you go to Subdomains, you can easily create them. Then you can go to name.domain.com or domain.com/name.
On the next question, do you mean you want name.domain.com/folder ? If you password protect the folder "name" then as far as I know, you won't be able to access /folder without putting in the password for the entire subdomain. Give it a try and see what happens.. post back here if you need to. Hope you made it outside!

Kayla, I think what they mean is they don't want the sub-domain's files to be hosted in the public_html folder.
I don't think cPanel allows it to be changed. I don't think you can change where the files are hosted unless you can modify apache's conf files. If you do, you should still be able to password protect them, but you wouldn't be able to use cPanel. You can install Joomla or whatever in a password protected area. |

I know in cPanel when creating a sub-domain you can specify a folder that is different from the domain's name. You can make blah.domain.com be in folder /public_html/zebra if you want. I haven't tried making one that would go to /public_html/subdomains/blah yet. I just may have to try that..

![]() Out of curiosity I gave this a try and I was able to create a subdomain outside of my public_html. To make sure it worked I placed the above image in this subdomain. So for the original poster, it looks like this will work. However, I don't know if there are any other implications.

I guess that's new in cPanel 11, it wasn't there in the past. That's pretty cool. |

![]() It looks like you can also do this with an addon domain, though I don't have one to test it with. But the capability is there in cPanel. I need to keep this in mind because in the past I believe I've advised people that their addon/sub domains can be browsed to from their primary domain. Now it looks like that's not necessarily true.
