Unhappy hopeless newbie :(

Ok, I'm kinda new to a lot of this lingo going on here and to web hosting itself, so I need some help in getting my site started...

I purchased a shared hosting account here at Surpass, and I purchased my domain name elsewhere (1and1.com). I received the confirmation email from Surpass, but now I'm kinda lost......

which address do I point my domain name to, my ftp address or my nameserver address? And if I point it to my nameserver address, which address do I use (there are two address I was given, listed below)?

I'm also a little confused as to how this whole cPanel thing works (I am totally new to it). I understand I can upload my files from it, but other than that, what purpose does cPanel hold?

Also, when I uploaded my index.html file to my public_html folder, I still get that yucky "Index of" page when I go to my ftp host address. And for the time being, what is my website address? Like, in cpanel it says /home/misschri/public_html, but what comes before all that? Like, my IP address/home.....?

The ftp program that I'm using is CuteFTP, if that is of any significance. I tried using ftp.misschris,org as my hosting address, but it didn't work when logging in, so I used my ip address instead, then my cpanel username and password and it logged me in......

any other help you could offer me would be greatly appreciated. I'm just frustrated because I just want to get my site up and running, and I can't because I don't understand a lot of this stuff I thought it was all going to be a piece of cake to set up

Here's my ftp host address:
http://66.7.205.59/

here's my nameserver addresses:
ns2112.dizinc.com
ns2113.dizinc.com

which address do I point my domain name to? Point your domain to your nameservers. Use both

ftp.misschriss.org will not work until your domain is pointed to those nameservers. For the time being you can login using 66.7.205.59 and your givin username and password.

The other questions I will have to leave for someone else to answer.

You have to login to your 1and1 domain account, and go to custom nameservers or something like that. and put in the nameserver addresses given to you by surpass. im really not sure how 1and1 works, so lets wait for those who have experience with them as they might be able to give you more specific instructions.

cPanel is your control panel to your website. from this you could control many things from your account, such as email accounts, applications you would like to install (through Fantastico), add subdomains (subdomain.yourdomain.com, example usages are one subdomain for your blog <blog.misschris.org>, one subdomain for your forums <forums.misschris.org> etc), manage your files and many more. i think there is a tutorial in cpanel, just check the help option in there.

you could also submit a support ticket and they could help you much better.

ok, so this question probably doesn't belong here, but since you huys have been helping me, I figured I might as well ask here anyway. I will be using cutenews on my site, and I managed to upload cutenews to my public_html folder and proceed with the installation process. Now I'm having a little bit of trouble getting the news to show on my site (I already wrote a test blog so that something would show). On the cutenews readme, it says to put the following php code in my page where I want the news to appear....

Quote:
<?PHP
include("path/to/show_news.php");
?>
or in other words, "cutenews/show_news.php"

I know that with Surpass, you can't simply have a .php extension, it has to be something like .php4......... the above code wouldn't show anything on my page, so I tried tweaking the php code around, but still nothing worked. Got any suggestions? I was also trying to include the php code between DIV tags, does that make any difference?

Thanks!

ha! It took me almost 4 hours of pulling my hair out (not literally, but you get the idea....) before I finally (I have no idea how, it just sort of "happened") got cutenews working. So nevermind, but thanks anyway!
