I really enjoy my new account at surpasshosting. I would not want to infringe on that in any capacity but i have been wondering what the legality? ethics? responsibility? of using announcement and auto emailing members of our forums that we use.

i currently use Enigma portal with a YabbSe forum. I tried a few others... and i liked and enjoyed the features of one sign in for most of the things that i wanted in trying to get a portal.

Anyways... i always wonder by using this type of forum if i email members that have registered to the site if there is spam issues if i decide to email all members with news or events or interesting topics? i am not trying to sell anything but i dont want an issue with someone emailing surpasshosting and saying im spamming them!

Does that make sense? i dont know if i have to be more explicit in the registration process that ... emails may come from time to time... or ...if i need to set up a different emailing list for people to specifically sign up to . to me.. that is the same. if someone signs up for a special interest site,forum,portal... there was some interest in the topic at hand to begin with .

Input , comments or policy would be appreciated.
Like i said initially , i wouldnt want to infringe on my relationship with surpasshosting

TIA

I'm sorry no one answered you all day, I believe they thought your posts were too thoughtful and left them up to me... and I did a million things today and still up at 3 AM.

It is best to create a list and ask them to sign up to it. Be sure the unsubscribe link is in each email, and that if someone does unsubscribe, that it works.

Yeah, do like teq said. Just make sure to stay on top of your lists. If someone requests to be removed, remove them. Otherwise if you kept sending them emails, they could complain and logs start piling up.

Generally though, there aren't problems like this when you have to signup for a mailing list. Sending to registered users isn't really that big a deal either, but I would make a separate list for people to sign up to explicitly for the purpose of receiving news, updates, and other info about the site.
