Installing Movable Type
I'm trying to install Movable Type. I'm reading their installation instructions but not getting very far.
I've opened the mt.cfg file in my text editor. I've changed the directory path. But when I come to configuration, steps 3, 4, and 5 I have no clue. The "instructions" mean nothing to me. Can anyone tell me in the simplest language possible what to do next? Or, does anyone know if Support will do the install for me? Thanks |

3. go to cpanel and make a MySQL database and a MySQL user, then add user to MySQL database, so that the user can use the database. then open mt.cfg, and add these line (it doesn't matter where you put it)

*just a warning.. movable type isn't as stable as b2 or wordpress, but you can go ahead and install it. |

That would be nice wouldn't it! Having to install that for the first time is kind of complicated. *nods* I've had to do it a few times.

I'm not quite sure what the reasons are, but i'm guessing that since http://movabletype.org/ has paid installations.. they don't want it in scripta (one click install)? Movabletype is pretty hard (and long) to install if you're a beginner, so people would most likely pay for it to be installed in their server.
I dunno. I'm just guessing. I'm prolly wrong, though. |

Thank you, angelie, for your help. I followed your directions and it did install fine.
However, I have one issue--the password to MySQL database--I assume it is the same as my cPanel password. I entered the password into the mt-db-pass.cgi file. I uploaded that file, but I get an error when I try to login to mt.cgi. See here: http://brianjones.org/weblog/mt.cgi Thanks again for your help. Oh, I did have scripta install Wordpress. I've been trying it out and may go with that. I'd like to try MT too, though. |

Well, the password depends.. when you made a MySQL database user, did you make the password the same as your cpanel password? check the MySQL user again in your cpanel if it exists or not. if it's there, then you prolly put a different password for the user.
