That is correct. Your information has to remain public in the WHOIS directory for your domain name, but there are registrars who offer services that would allow for you to remain private and instead of having your information display, it would have the contact information of the registrar company. One example of this can be found at http://www.domainsbyproxy.com/. Of course, there is an extra fee (per year) involved for using this feature.

GoDaddy offers a service like that. The thing is, some registrars might register the domain name under their name to begin with, so you don't legally own the domain.
