You can usally set routers to ignore pings or allow 1, there are ways of preventing them, I dont know exactly what equipment surpass runs or what there setup is but I know there are measures you can take to prrevent DDoS attacks

If i remember correctly, they set up equipment not to long ago to protect against this sort of thing

they did. I'm pretty sure what happened here is that their BGP routing did not work properly.

BGP routing allows you to have multiple paths into a data center. When one slows down or fails, you're supposed to automatically spread the load...

The load did not get spread... but it seems to be working fine now - I'm actually 4 hops closer on this route than on the old one.

The question, then, is why isn't it working?

Either you don't sell hosting or you don't care about the impact these outages have on your reputation and pocketbook. A month's free hosting does not begin to compensate me for the ill will generated among my clients. And frankly the DDoS attack explanation isn't satisfactory. When I was with Total Choice Hosting they were DDoSed all the time, and we users NEVER saw extended downtime due to an attack. Fifteen minutes, tops.

I'd like to know that myself.

I'm guessing a blip in the router config.

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt because it is a new datacenter. Lots of stuff is being tweeked. Pingtimes are down from what they were in April, so I know they're tuning the network.

They're not targeting surpass, I'm sure. They're targeting a site that is hosted by surpass....
