If I owned surpass hosting I would give serious thought to pulling the plug on forums like surmunity. You just can't win. I think they do a great job letting us know about problems but things are always going to happen. Even if they install programs to help fight dos attacks those programs might fail. Nothing is guaranteed in life but death and taxes. As to people upset about them deleting posts if it's an issue they're addressing on a specific forum why have multiple threads open especially if they're all bashing you while you're hard at work ensuring everything is back to work. It's their forums they should be able to do whatever they want. That's the way I see it. It's not a democracy. There are ton of web hosting related forums where people go and bash anyway so why allow that here? Just as you resellers don't like it when your customers are contacting you for things out of your immediate control the same thing applies to surpass hosting. Time to look up the golden rule. Servers will go down. Sometimes it might be due to their mistake other times due to script kiddies attacking a site in a particular server but I still believe surpass does the best job at keeping us informed and working hard to get things back online especially at so called "budget" hosting prices.

Hey,

First of all, let me address the issue of the threads being deleted by giving you a scenario:

Let's suppose you represent a hosting company called HostWithUsNowOrWeWillBringYouByForce.com

now let's suppose you run a community forum, and have let's say about a good 300 active members.

Of course keeping in mind that no hosting companies can guarantee 100% uptime, you faced about 2 hours of downtime this 1 day.

Now about 50 of your 300 active members create threads about this downtime, and asking what went wrong, etc.

Now suppose I am a new potential client just looking for a host, and found your site and forum. So I start browsing your forum, and see those 50 threads about downtime, so I would immediately close my browser, go to google, and find something else with less apparent downtime.

Of course you thought of this problem before hand, so you decided to delete 49 of those downtime threads, and keep 1 alive.

But nooooo... your users did not appreciate this, so again they create about 20 threads (so 30 from the 50 members posting threads, gave up), asking why their thread got deleted.

Now you tell me what surpass should do...

They should have merged them all into one thread and once the problem was over, locked it.

And they should either post in the individual server status threads which ones were affected or make a single announcement post telling those of us who weren't online last night what went on with our own particular server(s).

The thread turned into about 5 "Surpass Fans" discussing an offer at another hosting company. The thread has a reason for its deletion written next to it, all users can see these reasons. You can view the reason I recorded on the thread that was removed. It says exactly why the thread was disabled from viewing, because the thread was not about downtime it was about an offer at another company and everyone started talking about it. This is not the first time this forum has been used in such a manner. Even if you are frustrated with our problems as of late, that is disrespectful to us and I cannot believe those who were Surpass Fans were the ones discussing it and using our forum as a means to communicate about other hosts.

One other thread was removed, started by Apsylum called "well..?" asking where the announcement was, when I already had made it. I removed it due to that fact.

I do not know what everyone means by "all threads deleted about last night" and so on. It is completely false. Please do not say things that are not true.

Web hosting is a competive business. Even if a server is targeted, that doesn't mean that the target is a site on the server belonging to a customer. The target could actually be us, the server just a martyr.

Apparently what we have in place now isn't cutting it. YES we can and do call our provider and block the IP that is being targeted but during the time it takes to get that done, we could be blocking the massive traffic which seems to be growing with every attack we are seeing as of late. We are looking into another device made by the company Juniper called Netscreen. This is the second DDOS/SYN attack in the past 2 weeks.

Bodypainter, it depends on your location in this world and the lines you use to connect to the Internet if you were effected or not by the attack. This wasn't a server by server based issue, it was a network based issue.

An added note, bodypainter- nothing has been swept under the rug as you reported in an above post. I am sorry that other posts by other users are making it seem like something was done that was not.
