Let's suppose you represent a hosting company called HostWithUsNowOrWeWillBringYouByForce.com

now let's suppose you run a community forum, and have let's say about a good 300 active members.

Of course keeping in mind that no hosting companies can guarantee 100% uptime, you faced about 2 hours of downtime this 1 day.

Now about 50 of your 300 active members create threads about this downtime, and asking what went wrong, etc.

Now suppose I am a new potential client just looking for a host, and found your site and forum. So I start browsing your forum, and see those 50 threads about downtime, so I would immediately close my browser, go to google, and find something else with less apparent downtime.

Of course you thought of this problem before hand, so you decided to delete 49 of those downtime threads, and keep 1 alive.

But nooooo... your users did not appreciate this, so again they create about 20 threads (so 30 from the 50 members posting threads, gave up), asking why their thread got deleted.

Now you tell me what surpass should do...
I don't think there were that many threads, the only ones I read so far were the only 2 I have spoke of in my above posts.

But it is true for any online business that has a forum, of course you don't want potential clients to see posts about problems. Problems come up everyday whether about a ticket that still wasn't answered after x amount of time, a server load being too high, SQL not connecting, and the list can go on. If we were obsessive about negative posts, then we wouldn't have a forum.

I know I should be posting more during the past few days, being the main forum admin, but to be honest too much has been happening recently. We don't ever have a need for more admins in the forum because usually everything is quite except for random issues with tickets. So for me, as of late everything seems like an extreme crisis we are trying to battle.

Kayla - thank you for that bit of information. That's exactly what I wanted to know.

While I don't agree with deleting threads except in the most extreme circumstance, I do realize it's your board and you may do as you see fit. Given that, all I would insist upon is consistency (on your part) and in that regard I have no complaint.

I wish there was a way to make a list, that is what has been so frustrating about recent events. We want to compile info, we want to give a better announcement- something to put everyone at ease, but it is difficult to do so and in last night's case, impossible to do so.

But please let me know that you understand that I only removed one thread from being viewed and that you can see the reason posted beside it. That was called a soft delete.
The other thread, which I physically removed, was one post by Apsylum regarding "where is the announcement" when it was already made.

Kayla -

Thanks for updating us.

Have you had your network admins doublecheck the BGP routing with all of your providers? That REALLY should have aleviated the attack - especially combined with any other 'defensive device'.

Also - you have an email from my gmail account.

John

We are going to write up something that explains all of this, all of the terminology and what our next step is. Thank you for your concerns on it. I will try to check for your email as soon as I can.

Apparently what we have in place now isn't cutting it. YES we can and do call our provider and block the IP that is being targeted but during the time it takes to get that done, we could be blocking the massive traffic which seems to be growing with every attack we are seeing as of late. We are looking into another device made by the company Juniper called Netscreen. This is the second DDOS/SYN attack in the past 2 weeks.
Yeah, the fact that it has happened 2 times in the past 2 weeks is bad. But I for one have faith in you guys being able to bounce back to normal. I asked about that hosting place yesterday because I had a feeling that it was going to be some crappy host that I may have visited before finding Surpass. It wasn't one of them, but when I googled them on the web, I couldn't find anything about them either. In fact, a lot of stuff about their own site seemed a bit like someone I wouldn't want to move to, which made me wonder why the people that talked about going there actually wanted to. Like I said in the now closed thread, I have no plans of moving. I've been considering getting a dedicated box and this hasn't swayed my decision a bit. You guys have been one of the best hosts I've ever come accross. From the great prices to the incredible help, the quick response during downtime and lack of as much downtime as many of the past hosts I've been under have had, you guys are definetly worth staying for.

Just to set the record straight regarding the now deleted thread. I didn't say anything about any other hosting company nor did I say I was leaving. It was posted by IMsleepy that I had found an interesting possibility or words to that effect, which is true. NO offer was made, NO invitation, NO mention of another company. Then people asked her to PM them with the info. I had one person PM me about it. The only way I can see that it became public knowledge is if these Private Messages are as private as a postcard.

I did chat with some Surpass customers who contacted me. I told them why I wanted to leave and what I had found: a small company that can take care of MY needs, does NOT host "Adult" sites, and was easy to reach. I did not say anything bad about Surpass and I asked them to talk to the other company directly, so that they can make up their own minds.

Surpass has provided great service and support in the past, however, I don't think they are doing that consistently at this time.

I have canceled my account and this is the reason given:

I have lost faith in Surpass Hosting. I think you have grown too much - too quickly and are having equipment and service failures because of it. While I pray that you will get things worked out, I cannot wait for this to happen. I have moved to a smaller company that can be more responsive to my needs. Thank you for the service you did provide.

I am being honest and upfront about this. No hard feelings and I will miss Surmunity very much.

God Bless,

Richard Lindquist

Thank you for letting me know, Richard. You have to find the host that is right for you. We are going to pull through this and continue growing, no matter how inelegant it seems at times, and as hard as it is. So on that note, I hope that the company you are going to remains how they are. Because a long road is ahead for those who grow to their own data center, etc.

Again, for the record the post is not deleted. I plan to open any thread that has a disabled notice on them, after a certain amount of time has passed.

I know I've been doing a lot of joking around here lately, but I hope you all can take me a little more serious for the moment as I toss my two cents into the bucket.

I have been seeing a lot of deleted threads lately, more so than I see get deleted in places such as neoseeker, this makes me uneasy. Kayla, I know you said that you only deleted the one, but many have disappeared over the past month. I understand it is your forum here for us, but it causes many to lose faith in surpass when they try to quiet the problems, keep everything hush-hush. I personally have been getting quite aggravated with surpass and surmunity. The forums seem to be going downhill with all the new customers, and surpass has been dissapointing me, profusely.

A month of free hosting isn't going to cut it. I understand I have free hosting at the moment, and I appreciate it. I still have had quite a few problems lately though, ones that have not been addressed as I would have hoped they would. I was always one of the first people to speak on behalf of surpass on their customer service, you know that kayla, but no more. I had told some others that I planned on riding out my free hosting, mainly in hopes of things picking up, though these past few weeks have had me reconsidering this. I do not know exactly when I will be leaving surpass, but I have have almost reached my decision.

This is not meant to sway anyone in either direction with surpass. If you are happy with your hosting, then by all means, stay with them. If you are not happy with them, please make your decision on your own.
