Thumbs down Recovering missing files

After my site was down a whole day surpass had to restore it on backups from october 5th, which means that all new files are gone.... I NEED to get those files back. There were important changes lost on my forums, galleries, etc. and I don't want to lose visits because of this. They're not making it any easier for me, they keep complaining about it all the time. And they're right!
I e-mailed support and they said they would "try" to see if they could do something about it, but I don't understand why did this happened in the first place! It's unfair that they're just going to "see if"....
I don't want to hear a "maybe", I want to hear a "when". I need those files back. Is there a way to get them back soon, or am I going to have to change hosts (which I really, really don't want to do!!)?

Please help me solve this. I can't waste anymore time .

Thanks.

You really can't complain about them only having a backup from October 5th. When was the last time you backed up your site? It is your responsibility to back up your site. This is true with any host. You're lucky they had a backup at all. I've been with hosts who never backed up their servers.

The reason it happened was something went wrong with the hard drive. This can happen to anyone at any time. It happened on my home PC 2 months ago. Good thing I backed my critical files up every couple of days on CD.

From the TOS of Surpass

BACKUPS
Surpass Hosting takes extreme steps to maintain system integrity. However, Surpass Hosting shall not be held responsible for loss of data due to any cause. To ensure the highest level of data protection, Surpass Hosting recommends that ALL information be backed up on your own computer. As with any data that you hold a high importance to, it should be in more than one location at all times. All Surpass Hosting data backups are designed against hardware failure not customer user error.

It is always suggested that you keep copies of everything. Surpass atleast had a backup though, that wasn't months old. One of my last hosts restored a backup of mine once that was about 3 months old. I had no clue as to what the hell waws happening with my site.

Regarding backups, I do have one question: When you perform one through the backup manager, does it save everything, all files, folder structure, email, subdomains, databases, or just some of the aforementioned? I just copied about 700 Mb of data from one of my sites to my computer, and I hope it has everything.

The full backup should copy all files/directory structure/etc. It does not include a DB backup. You need to click on the individual DB's under Download a MySql Database Backup to backup the individual DB's.

Yeah, like pbflash said, you have to backup the databases individually. I had a site of mine moved by the guy hosting it, and he didn't backup the databases for me so if I hadn't thought about it, I would have lost them all.

Okay, other than the databases (I can take care of those myself anyway), is everything else contained in the tar.gz file that is created? mainly I am concerned about my emails (and my files and folder structure of course).

when you use cpanel and do a backup of your home directory - you also get a mysql dump of all your databses.

it is an all inclusive backup - everything in the home directory - mail, subdomains etc...
