How do I restore from a backup?

I just signed up and got my activation email and had my previous host make a backup of my site and he put it on my ftp but I have no idea what to do from this point on.

It's just one large .gz file. Can anyone step me through this? I'm not a newbie per se, but I've never done this particular operation before.
