Mike -

Please review the "make spam assassin work for you" thread, and ensure that there are accurate and complete instructions on how to convert the scripts to work with MAILDIR vs the original mbox configurations. This is way beyond MY capabilities, but I believe that some recent discussions in the thread may result in a functioning script.

I make this point because, to kill our functioning SPAM ASSASSIN in favor of Cpanel 11 would hurt horribly.
BigJohn,
Please dont worry. We will make sure Spam Assasin configs are not disrputed, we know how important clean email is to everyone.

If there is a mishap we'll have resolved ASAP, we are taking every necessary precaution to make sure this upgrade is as error free so everyone can enjoy the new features and improvements

Next precautions made will be transparent

Also, if there is ANY way to maintain the ability to view all email accounts when logging into webmail with the main user name, that would be great. This is a feature I would terribly miss because logging into each account separately would be a huge chore when not using Outlook or another such program.

Thanks.
benjamin,
Unfortunately we do not believe this is possible with this new mail sorting format. I posted this in another thread:
Although cumbersome, create a central email account for all mails at domain.com 'bulkdomain.com' then create forwarders for each mail account you wish to monitor. Voila now you can search the inbox and monitor mail as you did previous, you can sort by 'to:' if you would like to maintain some cleanliness. Dont forget to set the quota high in this account. Not the best workaround but it works =/

That's bad.
I use Thunderbird, and I have 8 email accounts logged in there at all times via Imap. I use this to move and sort and tag SPAM. If this stops working, I will, umm, SCREAM.
It wont Bigjohn

I've been copping with this since I moved to Pass 66 back in November. And to be honest, I didn't see any benefits from this change. On the contrary, it made things more difficult and more unreliable IMO. I can't access all email accounts from the main account anymore, I can't trust the quota readings on cPanel because they're always wrong, I've had problems sending/receiving emails that didn't happen before....

Really, I still don't know what's the good thing about this.

I know things change and we have to move on. But they should be changing for good, not for worse. And to me, this was a change for worse. Now let's see what cPanel 11 will bring us. I'm afraid it will affect Pass 57 and it will become unstable like the others I was hosted at.

I never liked upgrades right after they come out. I like to wait a little, give it some time until the bugs are fixed and everything is smoothed out.
Patty,
Few benefits of this conversion:
  • less chance of mailbox corruption for mail clients competing for a lock on the mail folder, overall no locking issues
  • ease of writing custom applications around it, I forsee cPanel to present extended mail options and mailbox tweaks in the upcoming months now that maildir is becoming more standard
  • more efficient, faster mail storage and retrieval
    OLD courier mta benchmark study:
    http://www.courier-mta.org/mbox-vs-maildir/
  • less server load for backups and restores
  • nested folders

Additional drawbacks:
  • slightly higher disk usage due to a file for each mail, occupying whole bloocks, as stated
some memory usage info on the link above
  • inability to switch mail accounts via master webmail login
  • no locking feature if you enjoyed it

I cannot underscore how IMPORTANT this is.

You're hearing from the few of us who are active in the forums... what happens when all of our CUSTOMERS (for those of us who are resellers) start complaining? And the people on shared servers who are just merrily plodding along, and then things that they do daily, and have for years, stop working....

I have this image in my head of "all hell breaking loose"....
BigJohn,
Rest assured it wont be as bad. Sounds like you are planning for the worst which is great in many cases, but in this situation you have nothing to worry about.

Well this explains all the problems I've been having. I mean I check the surmunity forums often, but it might have been nice to receive some other kind of notification about this.

In Apple Mail, I now have double copies of most of my folders, ie Drafts, Sent, Trash, and in addition the mailboxlist folder shows up.

I'm by no means an expert on using IMAP, but with the new change, do I need to change my prefix from INBOX to something else? It doesn't help that Apple's Mail app doesn't have the best IMAP support to begin with. At first I thought I had lost email, but so far it's all there still. Now I am just trying to cosmetically correct my double folder issue, but I'm getting a lot of errors when trying to delete the extra folders.
loudestnoise,
I'm not completely sure of your issue, but I have heard reports of double files and folders and it was a server-side issue. Please try contacting support and we'll get it resolved.

Is there any way to tell if our shared server has been upgraded?

You should be able to tell by logging into cPanel. I assume that the theme will change from "cPanel X" to "cPanel XI". Of course, you can always tell by looking at the bottom left of the main cPanel page. In the "General Server Information" section, there is an entry for "cPanel build" with the version number listed next to it. On SH93, it currently says "10.9.1-STABLE 14304" so it has not been upgraded yet.

I wish they would announce a schedule or at least give us a little notice before they make the change. I leave next Wednesday for a two week vacation. So if something goes kablooey with my custom SquirrelMail install, I won't be able to fix it.

I was more referring to the Maildir vs. Mbox, but that is also good to know rclarkofnc. Does anyone know how to tell if the server has maildir or mbox?

Yeah, look under the 'mail' folder in your account.
If you have a bunch of folders called 'new', 'cur' and 'tmp' with LOTS of crazy file names inside them, you're on MailDir.

Sorry for the confusion on my part, Brennanu. I forgot that theyre doing the maildir conversion prior to the cPanel upgrade.

A week ago, when they converted 60% of the shared servers, they said they were going to announce in this thread when they were getting ready to convert the last batch. No word from Surpass yet though. You'd think a major change like this would be planned, scheduled, and announced well in advance to give time for everyone to prepare. Doesn't seem to be the case here though.
