I have absolutely no idea if this is the right board to post this in, if not please forgive me.
I'm having issues with my server load. Does anyone have any possible tips on how I can cut it down a bit? It's at 17.56 (4 cpus) currently.. with a red blinking light signaling it's going up too high. Earlier it jumped up to 25 (4 cpus)! Then suddenly it shot back down to 7 or so. But I looked online, and it said on average it should be 0.1 or 0.2... How on earth is mine so high? Well more importantly, what can I do to fix it before it's too late?! I seriously would cry if my account would get suspended. :'( I tried enabling hot link protection, that didn't make much of a difference. Then I password protected the directory that is getting the majority of the traffic. Still didn't help much. Any ideas, please? I'd like to fix this a.s.a.p! Thanks a lot in advance. Watermelon? Haha. |

The server load does not represent the load just for your site, it is for the whole server. Your server may or may not be causing it. Do you have a high traffic website? What kind of scripts are you running? Are they all up to date? Those questions will help determine if your site is causing a problem.
You should also submit a ticket to support, letting them know of the server load. They will look into the issue, and see which account or service is causing it.

Thank you for replying!
I don't know what is considered a high traffic website, but so far since the beginning of this month I've had 3596 unique visitors, 315781 hits, and have used 6.08GB bandwidth. I'm pretty clueless on how servers work, but if it isn't my server that's causing it, then who's is? Or what can I do about it? I'm really concerned because last summer I made a really popular fashion forum and it created such a server load that surpass hosting suspended my account and I only got back since I agreed to delete the forum. So I really want to prevent that from happening again. :x Yay more watermelons, aha they amuse me. |

Looks like you're on SH67: http://www.surmunity.com/sh67/12815-sh67-72-29-68-123-shared.html#post154761
The serverload shows the usage for every site on your server. There may be 100 other sites on the server that can be causing the serverload to go up. There is nothing to do but submit a ticket when this happens. They can of course check if it's your server, but usually if you aren't using databases much, it's not going to be your site.

It looks like you're mosting serving image files or something? That won't really contribute too heavily to server load. Where you run into problems is with dynamic sites using various serverside scripting languages. In those cases, the easiest way to cut down on load is to start caching as much content as you can.
