My site requires a registered user's login to shout and post comments.
After I hand-coded the Captcha image into my Community Builder's infrastructure, there has not been any spam registration or commenting. Customization of the standard Joomla! code is my way to avoid spam bots.

You can remove the Comment module from Gallery2.. most packages will typically have an option to turn off commenting ability or at least offer some Captcha protection (the enter text you see in the funky image thing), or to only allow it for Registered users.
Some packages do not install these Captcha modules by default, Gallery2 being one of them depending on which package you install (lite, typical, full, etc..).. I had to download and install it myself. So far today my guestbook has thwarted around 50 comment spamming bots.

Lock'em Down
That is one of the first things I lock down on an install. Forum, Gallery, etc. Turn off anon posting, and anon comments. Gallery I just lock them all out because I don't run any sites that need galleries with feedback..
Safier that way. Of course none of my sites are popular. :-)
