Backups and stuff....a few questions

I use the complete backup for most of my sites at least once a week, I have heard that these can only be restored by surpass staff, firstly, why is that? When I download a complete backup and unzip it, it has everything admittedly, but if for example, all I needed to do was restore the 'home' directory, could I not do that myself?
Not that it's an issue having to have it done by surpass, I just wondered why it was the case.

On another note, I'm doing this like a noob, accesing each account separately and initiating the backup from cpanel - there has got to be an easier way of doing this!
I am sure it could be done by cron, but since I don't know how to use that, I've never touched it.
Can someone tell me how to set up a Cron job to make an incremental daily backup, save it to a remote server located elsewhere and notify me of success or otherwise?
Also would like to automate the weekly backup and have the backup emailed to me as a compressed file.
I have a php script that I can access via my browser to create a backup of the sql database/s and store it on the server, and I suppose I could alter that to have it emailed to me, but that's not really what I want anymore as I can only do this for the database.
Any ideas, scripts or tips would be greatly appreciated.

You can perform a home directory backup and restore yourself. However, a full backup must be done by Surpass as that feature is only available via WHM and not Cpanel.

If you click on the backup icon, you would select this option:

Home Directory

Download a home directory Backup

To the right of that area, you will see that you have the ability to restore a Home Directory backup as you mentioned wanting to do above.

I've never used it, but below I have a link to a tutorial and a PHP script that walks through an automated process of performing backups on Cpanel.

One last thing, I am not sure how many sites you have, but there is a much easier way. If you had a VPS or a dedicated server with Cpanel, you would have complete control of WHM. WHM has built in features to perform daily, weekly and monthly backups of all your sites. Plus you can easily restore each site with just a few clicks.

though if you do have a full backup, you can always just unzip it and upload the home directory like you mentioned, it just wouldn't have any mail or sql.

i have just been informed by surpass support that

Quote:
Hello Anil ,

This cron job is casing too much load in the server . This server is already configured with daily and weekly backups . Please remove the cron for backups . We don't allow this type of crons in shared environment .

Thank you
i am using backup script that has been discuss somewhere in this forum. the script runs once a day, and backup's to other server.

so, if you are on a shared or reseller account, you are no more allowed to use any similar script.

Well, if you have a really small site, the cron probably wouldn't be noticed, or cause any problem. but once you have a larger site, the nightly cron would definitely start causing problems

so, if the website is small in size, backup is fine. if its large, it may cause problem.

dewknight : do you [by any chance] have any indicative figure, like 50 mb / 100 mb / 200 mb etc which might be safe enough to backup [using a backup script]. anything large than that could be either done weekly or avoided.

also, if you have any other tip, that would help a lot to all reseller[s] out here.

thanx.
