Hosting Friends
I wasn't sure where to post this thread, but I hope its ok here.
I would like to be able to host a friend for free at my website, and I want to make sure I know what I'm doing before I proceed. What I'm planning on doing, is setting up a subdomain at my domain for my friend and then setting up their own FTP account. Basically what I want to know is there anything else I need to do to host someone or is an FTP account all they need. Any extra advice on hosting other people would also be appreciated. ![]() And this is probably a stupid question, but I want to be sure for the sake of my site's security... When I set up a new FTP account for someone, that person will only have access to the directory associated with that account, right? They won't be able to access any of my own files right? Thanks in advance for your help. ![]() |

Subdomain hosting is good for friends to start out. If your account includes add on domains, which it most likely does, that is another possible way to provide hosting to your friends. With add on domains, your friends would be able to have their own domain name and you would manage their account via your cPanel. This may or may not be something they are interested in.
More information on add on domains; https://desk.surpasshosting.com/inde...kbarticleid=59 You can check how many add on domains your account has within your cPanel on the left hand side menu with your account statistics. So you can host friends accounts many different ways, depending on their size and your budget. -subdomains on a shared account -add on domains on a shared account -domains on a reseller account -big very active domains on a dedicated server ... just to name a few

however, if your friend needed the use of MySQL database for the site, they would need access to your cPanel or you could set that up yourself for your friend.
I used to host this was for friends but then it became to cumbersome to always get phone calls or emails to change databases and other things in cPanel since they only had FTP access, so i just got a reseller. this way i just create an account for a friend and they have complete access and control over their site without even touching anything of mine. your option with the FTP account and add-on domain would be great if your friend were just hosting normal pages and other content. but if anything that needed databases and what not would be a little hard on your friend since you would always have to be there. |

I recommend using this program for your friends database usage. Super easy to use and really nice to look at...hahah...and they don't need access to your Cpanel in anyway! They just have to download it and everything. =) http://www.mysqlquickadmin.com/ Also here is a nice tutorial on how to use it, just in case you're confused by anything, be sure to tell your friends. =) http://tutorials.reminiscent-designs.net/read.php?id=47 |
