Oh this one is easy
I was dumb enough to use a free host that was not worth used toilet paper So I started watching the Webhosting forum at DSLReports.com to see who folks were using in the pay for arena. Free host may not cost you money, just your sanity ![]()

My previous host was pretty bad with support. I'd send in a ticket, and the response (4 hours later) was "We are currently having issues with the server" Really? I wonder why I sent in the ticket.
They also were out of date on everything. They didn't upgrade PHP or cPanel or anything until I told them there was a newer version out there. (but I did convince them to install PHP 5 and a bunch of other things). Also, FTP was constantly down. The price was good for all the drawbacks. But I couldn't stand staying there, so once I got more money I moved back to Surpass... Yes, I'm poor... Somewhat... The server was blacklisted as well, so I couldn't send e-mails to certain people. I also felt I was the only one on the server, because it would go down for 3 days, and I'd send in an e-mail and they said "Thank you for informing us." And there were also a bunch of sites that looked like they were scams/spam sites on the server. And one time there was no memory left on the server. |

As others have noted, lack of proper proactive server monitoring was a big issue in my decision to come to Surpass. I also exchanged emails with Kayla before making the switch and was (of course) extremely impressed!
So, here I am at Surpass... Couldn't be happier. ![]()

Should add, that since they had no control panel as mentioned above, they did in fact have a console on their website that controlled somethings, like adding complimentry database(was easier to call them and setup), email, file manager, some other things.
Host was local, and the calls were local as well, they didn't have a ticket system like Surpass. Enough of my rambling, last post in this one. |

I ran my own server at home while I was at school. It blew up after about half a year. I was going to fix it, but I would still be limited to 45kb/s upload speed which was not cool.

That was really helpful.
Actually, it says a lot for Surpass if it's really been THAT long...
