Do Surpass do their own backups by any chance? How old are they and where are they stored? I know it's better to rely on your own backups but it would be fascinating to know what their procedure is...
I know they keep backup copies but i'm not sure how often they do the backups

I didn't leave my previous host

I actually haven't left my previous host, but I'm trying to spread my hosting accounts around the web in case servers go down (which they do, no matter which host) or there's some catastrophe. Also, I had troubles when I would set up a new account (site) but didn't change the DNS yet and my domain (and email) were on the same server so we couldn't get email. That's about the same reason: to spread things around so I don't have all of my eggs in one basket.

That all said, I get more space, more bandwidth and at least as good support for a fraction of the cost of my other hosts.

I think the most crucial thing which makes people leave hosts is if they don't get good customer service. I left my old host not only because they never monitored the (probably crammed) shared server I was on, but also because when any problems arose, I'd wait days, sometimes weeks for them to reply to any tickets to sort something out.

The best thing about surpass is that every single problem I've ever encountered has been dealt with efficiently and at lightning speed by friendly human people whenever I've submitted a ticket. Sometimes it's so quick they've found and resolved the issue before I've finished writing a support ticket in thre first place. Ridiculously good!

I've been with my current host for many years, it was only really last year that I started to have problems with them, and I find myself losing my mind even trying to communicate the simplest things.

One of the many recent things with them. I want to pay with my card and I've used this same card before which they accepted. Now they tell me they don't accept it (Which took about 15 E-mails and two days for them to tell me) and that I can only use Paypal which is fine but it takes upto 9 days to move funds in. So I start the transfer for the amount they want.

I then instruct them to take the payment from Paypal, but it gets declined for what ever reason. So I ask them why...........

Every time I ask them why they send me out some standard crap about I need to raise my paypal limit, but I don't the limit was set high for the occasional high bill (many domain names renewing in a month).

15 more E-mails later, I realise it's because they'd sent me another invoice in amongst all the correspondence which added to the first invoice. I told them to take the first amount whilst I transfer in more for the second invoice. but they tell me they cannot split invoices.

How is charge for two invoices separate splitting one?

This is just one of many horror stories with 1&1.

My server had a few outages, all varying in time one about 9 hours, others less some more.

I call their support guys and tell them I need to speak with server support but they won't until they know my problem, it then takes 20 minutes or more for the person to understand me, and then tells me I need to speak with server support. Brains of the world these. And after explaining everything they just chuck me into a cue so I have to explain it all again.

I despise them now.

I'd been loyal for many years with servers and domains, and then they treated me like crap for the last year. I understand mistakes happen, but incompetence I can't stand.

I left my last host after the main HDD failed and they had no backups. Surely it's my responsibility to make backups, but they strung me along for two weeks telling me they had backups, and they were recovering them, as well as trying to retrieve data from the failed disk, but that never happened. So I took the few backups I had and moved to Surpass, and haven't looked back since. But now I make daily backups on a remote server on the other side of the country ;P

Yeah, I prefer people just be honest, it's easier to swallow then. On numerous occasions I'd had answers from 1and1 which were half true and blatant fabrications, which angers me.

They once sent me two different answers which contradicted each other, so I replied with something like 'Where you lying then or now, make up your mind which is it?' I then got another apology which was useless because they'd already done the damage by lying.
