[All] Installing WordPress Multi User (WPMU)

1. Unzip the contents of the file and upload directly into /public_html

2. Log into your cPanel > MySQL Databases > and create a username and database for WPMU. Then add the username to the database and grant all privileges.

3. Now go to yourdomain.com and you will see an installation screen. Fill in your username, password and database and continue.

4. You should see a successful install and next it will tell you to set permissions on two folders.

5. Now log into your admin panel and go to Site Admin > Options > and select Enabled for all. Blogs and user accounts can be created.

6. Now test if creating blogs works. Go back to yourdomain.com and choose Create a New Blog.

It should work fine!

Will you allow running WPMU on a shared server account?

It the site hits off, I would be willing to change to another account, but would it be okay to start out on shared space?

Hi there,

You can definitely start with shared. Get everything going and see what happens.

Thanks! Let me know if you have other questions.

@All,
I have submitted requests to the helpdesk for wildcard support on my subdomains in DNS, and wildcard support for subdomains in apache. That's all it took to get wordpress mu working correctly.
I have a shared hosting account. It is pretty fast too.

Same thing here. Starting two projects with it and just had to ask support to add the entry and thus it worked.

For anyone confused, ask support to add a wildcard DNS for the domain your using. My only complaint was that it is too easy Can't wait to get those projects off the ground!

For anyone in need of plugins and/or themes (as well as nearly anything WPMU), WPMUDEV.ORG is a good source and is free for the most part.

I'm using them :P

Absolutely. There are quite some interesting plugins for a network. I found a recent posts plugin that will look at all subdomains and create a nice list you can include anywhere...
Let's keep the links and tips on WPMU alive here!
Oh yeah, surpass performance is fabulous!!
