[All] How to create add on domains

How to: Add-On Domains

At some point, you may decide to purchase another domain name. Instead of buying a new hosting plan, you might be able to add domains onto your existing cPanel account.
Check your cPanel to see how many add-ons you are allowed.
1. Register It

Register a domain. Go to your favorite registrar, and select a domain. Pay for it.

2. Add Domain

Go to your cPanel and select AddOn Domain, fill in the fields. After doing the above cPanel will create a sub-folder of that name in your account that you can then access the same way that you access your main account.

3. Change Name Servers

Update your nameservers at your DOMAIN REGISTRAR, to point to your Surpass hosting server. It should be the same IPs/Hostnames that you use for your current account.

4. Upload your content

Now you can upload your content for your new website, and set up email accounts, etc.

5. Hurry Up and Wait

It can take DNS updates up to 48 hours to propagate across the Internet. You will be able to see it by typing in www.maindomain.com/newdomain right away. Eventually, after propagation has occurred you will be able to simply type in newdomain.com and go directly there and no one will know the difference.

Once it's done. Your site is live!

Please forgive my butting in but ... I think you should emphasize that middle sentence there where it says "Addon domains will not be functional unless ... and configured to point to our DNS servers" That has to be done before you do anything in cPanel and some one reading the above might think that they should register the domain first, then go in to cPanel and set up the addon domain and then go to their registrar and set the DNS servers to point to Surpass. But really they have to point the domain to the Surpass DNS servers first, before going in to cPanel and adding the add-on domain.

Because I tried to configure the addon domain in cPanel before I changed the DNS servers with my registrar and it failed for me. I had to do it in the following order...
1. Register a domain name.
2. Configure the DNS servers to be the same DNS servers that I use for my primary Surpass account where I am going to add the addon domain.
3. Then, after the DNS servers were changed with my registrar, go in to cPanel and add the addon domain.

Well... actually you could configure the domain in cPanel first before changing the DNS records to point your domain to Surpass Hosting.

You just probably fell victim to DNS propagation. Setting up the domains in cPanel first or setting up the DNS first makes no difference.

When I did it cPanel gave me an error saying that I had to change the DNS first. I don't remember the exact wording of the error message but it said something to the effect of there not being or not recognizing the domain name inn question. It was a domain name I had already had registered for quite some time so it was not a newly registered domain. It was just sitting with a temp page parked at GoDaddy. When I went to add it as an addon domain cPanel gave me the error that it could not see the domain or it was not a valid domain or something like that.

I then posted in here and someone told me I had to change the DNS at GoDaddy first, then create the addon. So I went to GoDaddy and changed the DNS as instructed and went right back to cPanel and the addon domain installed perfectly.

That was just my experience. I don't know why but that is how it happened.

I am having a problem with add-on domains. I followed the step-by-step instructions as best as I could. I used the Who-is to find out what my Name servers were for my main site.

I removed the existing name servers for my new site with the registrar and then added the name servers for my add-on domain. I went to c-panel and set up the Add-on domain. However, when I go to http://www.mainsite.com/newdomain it just gives me an error:

"The requested URL /nightowlleather was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request"

Does it take a while for c-panel to do it's thing or is it just because the name server info has not propagated yet?

Just to clarify, you added the nameservers given to you originally from your welcome email to the registrar that your add-on domain is, correct? For one, it may be that the nameservers have not propagated yet, like you asked, yet that shouldn't stop the subdomain from working.

Can you please post a link to both your new add-on domain and the link for the subdomain?

If you are doing an add-on domain then you don't have to go to mainsite.com/newdomain. Just go to newdomain.com and it should work.

As far as going to the subfolder that the newdomain is, that should work immediately but what I noticed is that sometimes cpanel adds the .com to the end. If that is what happened to you (you would be able to tell by looking at your folders in your ftp program or cpanel and see what the subfolder is named) then you would have to go to mainsite.com/newdomain.com

I just tried creating an add-on domain myself and it didn't add the .com to the end for the subdomain. I wrote roxy.com in the domain field and it automatically wrote roxy in the subdomain field. Probably a new Cpanel 11 thing. =D

OK, to clarify, I have an existing account http://www.kz650.info I just recently learned (yesterday) that I could do an add-on domain, so I bought a new domain for my business nightowlleather.com from name.com.

At name.com I removed the NS.... name servers from nightowlleather.com domain and entered the name servers for KZ650.info.

I then went to kz650.info/cpanel and logged in. I added an addon domain for nightowlleather.com. In filemanager, I can see a folder for NightOwlLeather.com under my home directory of /home/kz650/public_html. If I enter in http://www.kz650.info/NightOwlLeather.com then my "Under Construction" page is displayed, but when I enter http://www.nightowlleather.com it changes to this:

http://nightowlleather.com/parking.p...owlleather.com

and then it says that the site is unavailable
