Joomla

Hi All,

I am seeking your advice on this. I have used many CMS's over the years and am tired of the same ole same ole. I have looked into Joomla a few times, and to me it seems alittle more complicated then the ones I am used to.

So I would like to hear other's opinions on Joomla vs PHPNuke, Fusion and others with a few pros and cons if at all possible.

I want a different look for my sites and can't afford to pay someone to do the job for me, LOL.

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply.

Ron S.

Ron -
Have you TRIED joomla?
It's a slightly different paradigm. The Sections / Catagories Content scheme don't make a TON of sense, but typically you really don't need to delve into sections.

Hi BigJohn,

No I haven't actually tried it. Several times I installed it via cPanel and looked at it and got nervous, LOL so I removed it. Once I had it on a temp site and forgot I had it and noticed it was still there 4 months later.

Again I have tried other portals, and to me they all look the same only different colors and images. So I heard with Joomla you can lay things out differently and am kinda lost looking at all the things I see in the Admin section.

Brandon -
I have looked at it and at this time I don't have the $99 to invest in the Program. I am not sure how much someone may be able to do with the lite version which is Free and therefore never messed with it.

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated.

From me playing around with Joomla and Mambo (since they work the same) I would recommend those two CMS's to people who have large websites that have user interactivity and the like.

Joomla by first glance can look really tricky, but it is fairly easy to use as long as you read around it. What I would do is upload it and then mess around with it for a bit, helps you get a feel for it and learn more about it. Everyone has their different opinions, the one that counts the most is your own, so try it out!

Don't upload using Cpanel.

Create a database
create a database user/password
write those down
Create a subdomain of your account.
upload the joomla tar.gz file into your subdomain folder.
With Cpanel file manager, unzip the file.
Run the install (subdomain.domain.com/install)

Then play.
There are a billion templates out there.

Why not through Cpanel? Just curious...

By-the-way have you tried Drupal?

If my site wasn't down, you could see my site at http://www.trenttompkins.com/

The site runs Joomla, but it is heavily modified. While Joomla does make adding content easier, a lot of little stuff takes a lot of screwing around. For my latest site I decided to write my CMS from scratch, which I could also show you, if my site wasn't down.

Roxy - Well it isn't a large site, just a small hosting site with little users, LOL. Yes I have been working with it here and there and looking to see where things were from admin panel to pageview. So I am understanding it somewhat more.

Drupal - heard of it, never even messed with it.

BigJohn - Nope I had read something about installing Joomla via cPanel so this current one I downloaded, unzipped and installed. YEah I have downloaded probably about 100 of them in the last few days, LOL.

tibberous - Site looks sharp, well the one in the link you provided.

Thanks Folks,
