Email not working

I know I can post in the WHMCS support forum but thought I'd ask here first in case I have set up SMTP wrongly for usage with Surpass.
Has anyone else here had any problem with SMTP email from WHMCS.
Under General Config > Mail I have it set up as follows:
Mail type = SMTP
SMTP Port = 25
SMTP = host mail.mydomain.net
SMTP username = emailaccountmydomain.net
SMTP password = password for above account
Mail signature = something witty
System emails from = WHMCompleteSolution
System emails from account = emailaccountmydomain.net
BCC = a googlemail account of mine

When I view a client and click "Send message" to test email (having loaded the "Welcome" email), I get the message:
There has been an error sending the email (Welcome)

How do my settings compare to yours (if yours works).
Unfortunately can't compare mine to the settings at WHMCS demo as that area is unavailable on the demo.

forgot to say, phpmail works fine, just trying to avoid potential problems with free email accounts.

I finally tracked down the cause of this.
In General Configuration > Mail, where I had specified the email address to login to SMTP with, there was a space at the end of the email address (one of the dangers of letting Firefox auto-fill fields).
